The story of the Cash Register and the Pony House
The inventor of the first working version of a mechanical cash register was James Jacob Ritty of Dayton, Ohio. Ritty was a bar keeper who owned his own saloon, The Pony House.
One of the biggest problems Ritty had in his bar was that some of his employees were dishonest. Rather than depositing the customer’s money they would pocket it and keep it for themselves.
Ritty got tired of this behaviour. In 1878 while on a steamship to Europe, he came up with an idea for a possible solution to the problem,. …. a cash register.
After some trial and error his third design was a success and became the prototype for the cash registers we use today.
